This topic is based on the rise of Asian influences within fashion. From small details with historical significance, such as the tabi shoe, to full influences such as the cheongsam collar, there has been a noticeable rise in these influences within fashion. This most likely stems from the upward consumption of Asian media within the last decade. Ironically enough, during the lockdown, despite there being an upward tick in racism towards Asians, there was also an upward tick in the consumption of Asian media. While many forms of Asian media have been consumed over the years, there are notable influences from Japan due to anime, manga, and idol culture. Since the 90s, anime has been popular, with notable anime being Sailor Moon, Pokémon, and Cowboy Bebop. Since then, the popularity has grown tremendously and has grown in influence. There are also notable influences from Korea, from K-drama and K-pop. With the rise of K-pop, many people around the world have adopted notable lifestyle changes from Korea and its culture. Although K-Pop used to be more heavily made fun of, nowadays it has made great impacts throughout the world. From idols being models to K-Pop music being heard in generic stores, there has been a great increase in their influence across the world.

Lately, I have noticed many influences from China as well, not only from fashion but also from overall lifestyle. Although I suspect it may come from the sudden popularity increase from RedNote after TikTok got shut down the first time around. These examples include the rise in Douyin-style makeup, meeting people at a “very Chinese point in their lives,” Popmart blind boxes, and more. Although it has allowed me to feel more educated and further connected with my Chinese side, there has been some backlash due to previous instances of racism that many Chinese people had to endure. Despite COVID-19 being less than a decade ago and the amount of hate Asians faced, many seem to have forgotten or brushed past the era of time.
